Common Question

Can an operator discontinue conservation by using an incinerator within 500 m of a residence?

Archive Findings

Not always. Historical records indicate that conserving facilities with first gas disposition before January 1, 2020 could not discontinue conservation by installing an incinerator or enclosed combustor within 500 m when volumes were greater than 900 m3/d.

That allowance was only identified for facilities that did not have gas dispositions before January 1, 2020.

Do not treat incineration as an automatic fix for residence spacing. Confirm first gas disposition date, prior conservation, gas volume, sourness, resident distance, and whether the site design can actually meet the 500 m requirement.

Current Guidance

Current Directive 060 retains requirements for conservation, residence spacing, incineration/enclosed combustion, and notification. Use Directive 056 for related participant involvement and facility application requirements.
