Common Question

Can an oilfield waste approval accept any oilfield or non-oilfield waste once issued?

Archive Findings

No. The 2015 checklist required applicants to list proposed waste streams for each facility activity and address extra information for imported oilfield waste or Alberta-generated non-oilfield waste.

The checklist also noted that hazardous non-oilfield waste needed a recoverable component and could not simply be accepted for fluid disposal.

Define the waste stream, source, activity, treatment/disposal path, and reporting basis before filing. Avoid broad wording that leaves AER uncertain about what the site is actually approved to receive.

Current Guidance

Use Directive 058 and Manual 034 for waste acceptance and activity requirements. Use Directive 047 where waste receiver reporting applies.
