How to Submit a Packer Isolation Test

Overview

Packer isolation tests are an important compliance requirement for wells where isolation performance must be confirmed and reported. Required packer isolation test results are submitted through the AER Digital Data Submission system. Operators are responsible for ensuring the required tests are completed, recorded, and submitted accurately.

This guide summarizes the recommended test procedures and the general DDS workflow for submitting annual well packer test results.

When This Process Applies

This process applies where a well requires an annual packer isolation test. Under the referenced interim directive requirements, required packer isolation tests are submitted by September 1 each year through DDS. Licensees should also ensure that the well status in Petrinex and the well licence status in the AER-designated information submission system are updated and aligned.

Before submitting, operators should confirm which wells require annual testing and make sure the appropriate field test results are available.

Recommended Test Procedures

The recommended procedure depends on the initial casing pressure condition. Where casing pressure is greater than 1400 kPa before bleed down, the casing pressure is bled down to 0 kPa. The shut-in pressure is then recorded after 24 hours and any pressure increase is evaluated. If the pressure increase is less than 42 kPa, or 3 percent of 1400 kPa, the test is considered satisfactory.

Where casing pressure is less than 1400 kPa before bleed down, the casing is bled down to 0 kPa and the casing annulus is pressure tested to 1400 kPa. After the well stabilizes, the pressure is recorded over a 10-minute test interval. The pressure is then bled down and the shut-in pressure is recorded after 24 hours. If the 10-minute pressure change is less than 3 percent of the test pressure and the 24-hour pressure increase is less than 42 kPa, the result is considered satisfactory.

Where there is no initial casing pressure, the casing annulus is pressure tested to 1400 kPa and allowed to stabilize. The 10-minute pressure result is then recorded. If the pressure change is less than 3 percent, the result is considered satisfactory.

DDS Submission Process

Log into DDS, select AER submissions, then well packer test results. Choose the option to submit annual well packer test results. Wells that require an annual packer test should appear in the account. If a required well is not listed, it can be added by searching the well licence number and selecting Add.

Select the UWI line for the well being reported and choose Select Licence. Enter the required test information, including report date, test reason, test date, well classification, test pressure, test duration, test result, and licensee comments. After reviewing the information, select Submit Details.

Key Considerations

Operators should confirm the test result entered in DDS matches the field record. Missing wells, incorrect licence numbers, incomplete test data, or inconsistent status information can create reporting issues.
