How to Find Well Data on the AER Website

Well Licensing

Mar 31, 2022

Overview

The AER website provides access to public well data that can support regulatory, technical, and planning work. Operators and consultants may use this information to review well identifiers, licence information, well status, intervals, pool and field codes, and other data needed for applications or internal analysis.

This guide summarizes how to locate well data through the AER website and highlights the types of information that may be useful when preparing regulatory submissions.

When This Process Applies

This process applies when an operator needs public AER well information for licensing, offset reviews, reservoir analysis, or application preparation. Examples include confirming well details before preparing an application, reviewing offset wells, checking wellbore or interval information, or confirming field and pool codes for regulatory work.

Navigating to General Well Data

Start on the AER website. From the main site, navigate to the information and data reporting area. The training video shows the path through Providing Information, then Data Reports, then Tableau Reports. From there, open Activity and Data and select General Well Data.

The General Well Data page provides access to a collection of well data reports. These reports may include well summary information, well licence information, drilling and completion data, wellbore details, downhole information, pool and field references, and other public data sets.

Using the Reports

Once the General Well Data reports are open, select the report that matches the information needed. Some reports allow viewing information online, while others may provide download options. Depending on the report, users may be able to search by well identifier, licence number, location, field, pool, or other parameters.

When reviewing a well, confirm that the identifiers match the intended well. Many errors occur when users rely on a similar location or a related well but do not verify the exact licence or well identifier.

Field and Pool Codes

The training video also references AER field and pool code information, including the ST103 field and pool code resources. These references can be useful when confirming reservoir or pool information for regulatory applications, reservoir studies, or supporting technical documentation.

Key Considerations

Public data should be reviewed carefully and cross-checked against internal records where available. AER data may be presented in multiple reports, and different reports may serve different purposes. When using the information for an application, make sure the data source, date accessed, and interpretation are documented.

Practical Tips

When using AER well data for application support, save a copy of the relevant report or record the date the information was accessed. Public databases can be updated over time, so keeping a record of the source used in the application is helpful. If the well data will be used to support a technical interpretation, confirm the details against other available records before relying on it. The same information can also be useful when responding to internal questions about well history, confirming an offset list, or preparing background material for a reservoir or licensing review.
